How Do You Treat A Nerve Hit While Drawing Blood

A nurse touched a nerve...what should I do?

AnthonyMs profile image

I recently had a blood test and now accept shooting/tingling pains down my arm and manus particularly around the wrist/thumb area. The nurse involved supposedly inserted a needle into a vein at the elbow, but she must take done something wrong because I immediately felt intense hurting in my hand. I'k guessing the needle either missed the vein completely or went through the vein, hitting a nerve direct below information technology. I thought the pain would be temporary because I didn't feel anything else later on that mean solar day, but now 4 days later I experience shooting/tingling pains when I extend the arm/twist the wrist and my arm movements are limited due to the hurting. Volition this hurting go away and should I seek medical advice?

bikerlifestyle profile image

can you phone and speak to your gp?

at my practise you lot can foud effectually midday and speak to a physician, or phone and explain to the receptionist and they will cheque information technology out with a physician and let you lot know whether yous need to come in

i would say better prophylactic than sorry just become information technology checked out

AnthonyMs profile image

I'll visit the medico next week if the pain doesn't get away over the side by side few days. I don't know if they tin provide any treatment for this, but if information technology'south something permanent, information technology needs to go along my record.

Did information technology become any amend because the same thing happened to me and my parents just recall It'due south no big deal?

I had this happen to me about 5 years agone likewise. I felt an instant electric stupor all through my arm when the needle was inserted, the nurse didn't remove it or even care when I told her. I tried everything, I couldn't straighten my arm I felt a compression in my between my elbow every fourth dimension I bent it or wore tight wearable. I started doing research on nerve damage from a blood describe, it is a matter and nurses just don't intendance, they're so uneducated about nerve injury during claret depict it's scary. I myself started doing lots of enquiry because I wasn't getting better at all. Then a few years I constitute out about cold laser therapy which is acupuncture but with a laser, it actually helped me. I started later than I should have because I didn't know about it, however i suggest taking action equally soon as yous see no progress in your healing.

Likewise, from my research I institute these vitamins help repairing nerve damage; B12, ubiquinol, zinc-copper (go a mixed i, as zinc can cause copper deficiency). These were besides all recommended by my acupuncturist. Lastly, muscle tightness around the nerve cause inflammation and pain as well. I constitute this amazing site in my hours and hours of inquiry, I don't have the link ATM but when I find information technology I'll share it. Basically, you experience that sharp pinching pain because the muscle is actually tightening around nerve. From this site, I found doing specific stretches releases the pressure on the nerve from the muscle and relieves that sharp pinching pain. I have done all of these myself and I am speaking from my ain experience, doing stretches, taking vitamins and laser acupuncture helped me. However, I am non a doctor and I am highly recommend you lot seek advice from a professional, although they don't know shit. I hope this helped someone out there!

Hi,information technology will heal, don't worry. It took my nervus about two months to heal, but the pain and the range of motility improved with every passing week. I tried to not move it as well much, simply I don't know if this contributed to the "faster" healing or non. Don't stress too much about it, I tin can promise y'all that it will heal, fifty-fifty if it takes a bit longer than that.

I'm sorry this happened to you, I felt horrible also, but people heal from much more than serious incidents, you lot will likewise.

The one he chose was quite almost the os and it hurt like hell and had to be removed when my arm went numb. Information technology took a couple of weeks before the sensations you describe finally subsided.

I got an amends and was warned that nerve harm can exist dull to heal. Promise it'southward improve presently.

Well, it's good to hear that yours healed, it brings some hope. I always idea nerve harm was permanent but I'll expect and come across. If the pain doesn't go away over the weekend I'll visit the doctor. Thanks

tennijul profile image

Minor nerve impairment is not permanent fortunately. Endeavor not to worry. Information technology is very painful though and it does take former to heal. I don't recall some nurses give this due consideration actually at times. If nosotros were animals, it may exist more likely to be accounted cruelty to animals. That'due south because animals can't rationalize, I suppose, simply it nonetheless flaming hurts and is very anxiety provoking in some cases also

Make sure you report this to your GP, if only strengthen any compensation merits should this turn out to be a long term injury like mine.

That is exactly how I felt with the stretching it downwardly and the pain towards my thumb when she instered the needle. From what I got talking to the nurses, she hit a nerve. It took me almost 3weeks before i was able to fully workout omwiyh no pain. I used deep blue cream (doterra essential oils) and that actually seemed to assistance. Adept luck!

Lftarm714 profile image

I had the aforementioned thing happen to me on July 14th, I guess the nurse was tired..lol information technology was 1:30am still it coming more than bothersome everyday. Hope you become better soon

MissMc6 profile image

Me as well last a Fri at hospital the needle went in to my wrist at the side just higher up my pollex, when I came off the ceiling I thought that hit a nervus! Information technology'south such a strange painful sensation now down my thumb

If I motility it or affect where the needle went in. Just hoping it eventually gets meliorate.

tennijul profile image

Endeavour not to worry. Such injuries do tend to heal. They are painful and take a while put the impairment tends not to be permanent. I do think some nurses make besides little of it. They don't seem to get the level of pain and discomfort they are causing let alone anxiety. I feel some demand some re-training too equally well as some patient intendance improvements

I have been experiencing the aforementioned thing but mine has just stared out of nowhere. I am in discomfort and it is getting worse especially at night. Its been 3 weeks now.

Im I going to die? I feel this pinching and stupor pain every area of my torso.

Rdranki1 profile image

A nurse inserted the needle in to my tendon, intense hurting, even though I was on morphine, I had a tingling sensation, which lasted three days. Months later I began to feel a severe aching pain in the cheat and downward my arm, enough to wake me upward during the nighttime. Now fourteen years later it's a weak betoken and on occasion has flared upwards. I've had Physiotherapy, which hasn't resolved the weakness and if I accept to lift a heavy object there'due south e'er a risk involved.

Lftarm714 profile image

The same thing happened to me 21 yrs. A xanthous jacket got me proficient. And so the nurse giving me steroids hit a nerve. I've been to the hospital numerous times. I hope my arm doesn't take that long. I'll have to take my arm taped to my side.lol

LeandroR profile image

Hey Anthony. Same exact issue happened with me this past Monday (4 days ago) and the pain is all the same there when i stretch my arms. Do you remember how long it took till your pain went abroad?

Yeah i just had my blood drawn concluding calendar week mid calendar week. When the blood draw started I felt a immediate shock on my left arm. She drew 3 vials of blood then and I didn't feel silly and so I commenced with my conditioning later that day. Fast forward the adjacent 2-3days I keep feeling a shock sensation when I stretch my left arm. I thought it would go away by solar day 3 but it'due south notwithstanding prevalent. It definitely has gotten slightly better than the offset solar day simply still it healing as I idea it would.

I suspect the nurse did struck a nerve on my arm to. I'one thousand going to contact my GP nigh this and update this.

mydepechemode profile image

I was having my blood fatigued yesterday but the phlebotomist couldn't fill the last vial and so she called a nurse in; the nurse told me that she was going to go under the 1st draw site - when she stuck the needle in information technology felt equally if my wrist up to my elbow was on fire (like alcohol being poured into a big open wound) accompanied by pain. When I exclaimed to the nurse about the pain she told me that she must have hit a nerve (but she fabricated sure she filled the vial commencement). Well it'due south well over 24 hours afterwards and if I try to extend my arm or move my fingers I get a horrible electrical shock. I'chiliad hoping that mine doesn't final iii-5 days similar yours and I will exist looking out for your update.

bailey2406 profile image

Im going through the same thing right now what was your outcome

I have had that happen many times and ordinarily a week later it goes away. I credit information technology to sloppy needling.

bailey2406 profile image

I experience its negligence

Other times I get a nice bruise, which ever makes me question how difficult this tin be.

bailey2406 profile image

The hospital sent me a alphabetic character stating there conducting an investigation

I'grand a regular blood donor - gave blood dorsum in June and the nurse hit a nerve. 5 months subsequently and I still have half a numb forearm/half shooting pains when I use that arm. Sometimes it'southward merely a terrible throbbing anguish when information technology's not even moving.

When it first happened, I went to the docs and they advised it would take a long time to heal and I should exist patient. Think it'due south time to go back!

Mellowmeggs profile image

Accept you healed? I'chiliad nervous mine will exist permanent, I had the same feel equally you.

I had a blood exam quite a few months ago. When having it done i felt an instant burn down downwardly my forearm. I hadnt had a blood test for over 10 yrs, i commented to nurse " Gee i dont remember blood tests hurting this bad ". She connected on getting viles of bloody n schrugged my comment off. The pain was getting worse and worse, like a burning rod in my arm. If she hadnt finished when she did i was about to inquire her to take it out. That day my arm ached, the adjacent few days i could hardly utilize my arm. Months on, i have lost strength in my arm and a deadening ache comes and goes during the mean solar day AND keeps me awake some nights. I dont want to go back as i dont want another blood test to bank check my nerve damage!

Hello! Only wanted to bank check in and encounter how you're doing? I just had this happen to me this by Wednesday and my arm is actually getting worse. I become the electrical daze more than frequently and if I push on the blood describe sight it's an immediate trigger. Looking for some hope, I have two little girls and am pregnant with my 3rd and lifting them up correct now is excruciating and breaks my heart.

Elfmore profile image

That's swell, cheers for getting back to me! Did you meet any doctors or try any home remedies? My GP wants me to start physical therapy, but I recollect that's a piffling extreme.

Mellowmeggs profile image

I did laser therapy at a local chiropractors office. It'southward been shown to speed up nerve regeneration. I noticed a big difference after a few sessions and so I went a few more than times and so information technology'south been gone since. I'm not sure your situation merely its worth looking into if your injury is nervus related.

Elfmore profile image

I will definitely wait into that - give thanks you! And yes, my injury is nerve related. The phlebotomist struck a nerve during my blood draw and all she said was, "I must've non wiped off all the alcohol." Two days later, I woke upwardly with pain in my left palm, unable to fully extend my arm, not to mention the throbbing pain that comes when I try to motion it. It'due south very irritating, and all I'one thousand being told is that it will heal in time.

Mellowmeggs profile image

Wow, that's exactly what happened to me! The nurse fifty-fifty made the same comment about the alcohol. I was told information technology would heal in fourth dimension too but using my arm was excruciating and with a toddler how could I just non use my arm? It was atrocious. I would definitely look into light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation therapy, after 5 sessions over the course of ii weeks the pain was virtually completely gone and and then over the next month the rest of the pain simply slowly went away. I recall the laser therapy definitely helped speed it upwardly. I promise yours gets amend before long!

I'grand having the same problem. The clinic actually tried to deny that the needle could be moved effectually in my arm. I have a problem with blood and so I was looking away. But I felt the same pain like my arm was on fire and the electrical stupor hurting. I sucked it up for a few seconds because I tend to exist a large babe about seeing blood and needles. Merely, after hearing a comment from my mom that she was moving the needle effectually too much, that's when I told her to end. She never concluded upwardly drawing whatever claret because she couldn't find a vein. She recommended me to a blood draw clinic and I was in and out in 5 minutes. I didnt feel whatsoever hurting and I was literally dancing around like, "thats it?!!?". I figured it was how it was suppose to get for the first one. I hadn't had a blood draw since 6 years, so I knew something was wrong after the sensation from the doctors function. I can't extend my arm to a sure point and the area is still sensitive. It is week two already and I still experience it. I have a job as a waitress/busser at a decorated resteraunt then I've been having a hard time working considering I take to lift heavy things everyday. For a while I kept my arm glued to my side, but the medico kept telling me everything was fine and that I didn't have a major injury and that it happens all the time.

GarnetQueen profile image

Aforementioned thing happened to me this by Tuesday. At commencement, I thought it was one of those situations that yous'd see on "Untold Stories of the ER" and the IV needle broke off. Merely when I saw my PCP on Thursday, her nurse said the ER nurse striking a nerve. My PCP said it would become better in a couple of weeks.

There is a huge bruise and some of the veins/nerves were discolored similar a bruise. I literally cannot use my left arm (from the elbow downwards) for annihilation!! When I bend my wrist to hold the phone or text and then unbend information technology, I accept excruciating pain. This is in add-on to the shooting pain and numbness I'm already feeling. Here's what makes it worse...I accept Multiple Sclerosis and my nerves are weak and sensitive.

I've tried OTC hurting relievers, Ice, heat, Bio-Freeze, Lidocaine ointment and zippo works. I really don't need annihilation else fall autonomously on me medically.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

How-do-you-do, How is your arm? Whatever improvements?
